PSHE & RSE
PSHE & RSE Curriculum Information
Personal, Social & Health Education (PSHE) is a planned programme of learning through which children and young people acquire the knowledge, understanding and skills they need to manage their lives - both now and in the future.
Lessons start in the Early Years and are progressively built upon, right through the school into Y6. RSE is delivered through the ‘Ten:Ten Life to the Full’ scheme recommended by Salford Diocese. It is the school’s policy that the scheme is delivered from EYFS to Year 6 over the year with a progressive curriculum. This scheme will teach RSE within the context of a Christian understanding of human sexuality rooted in the wisdom and teaching of the Catholic Church. School staff are responsible for the delivery of the scheme. External agencies and healthcare professionals may also have an input, although always in line with our school ethos and the Church’s teaching.
Caritas in Action
Our Caritas in Action is a unique program to support RSE teaching, which embeds the principles of Catholic Social Teaching, based on the belief that God has a plan for creation, a plan to build his kingdom of peace, love and justice. Caritas curriculum is mapped across all year groups with the whole school celebrating a particular theme at the same time throughout the year through class activities, worship and assemblies. This gives pupils further knowledge that will enable them to make informed decisions about their wellbeing, health and relationships, as per recommended in the DFE statutory guidance.
Speak Truth to Power
Our Lady’s also delivers the Speak Truth to Power program, a human rights education program that combines storytelling and interactive learning to provide the next generation with the concrete knowledge they will need to create change and advance human rights. This is delivered over half a term within Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2. It provides children the opportunity to learn how to speak up and accelerate change.
Children are actively encouraged to apply the skills and knowledge from PSHE throughout the Caritas in Action work and by demonstrating our school values:
Kind Positive Safe
Nurturing Forgiving Loving
Respectful Honest
Here at Our Lady’s, we are a nurturing school and so PSHE consistently underpins learning alongside the Catholic values, across the school. The six nurturing principles outlined below underpin the environment that we create at Our Lady’s for children to feel safe and comfortable enough to discuss topics within PSHE.
-
Children's learning is understood developmentally
-
The classroom offers a safe base
-
The importance of nurture for the development of wellbeing
-
Language as a vital means of communication
-
All behaviour is communication
-
The importance of transition in children's lives
SRE
What is SRE?
Sex and Relationship Education (SRE) is lifelong learning about physical, moral, social and emotional development. It is the understanding of the importance of marriage and family life, stable and loving relationships, respect, love and care.
Aims of Relationship and Sex Education (RSE):

-
To develop pupils’ confidence in talking, listening and thinking about feelings and relationships.
-
To help pupils acquire the skills necessary to develop and sustain relationships
-
To offer sex education in the wider context of relationships.
-
To ensure that pupils protect themselves and ask for help and support when needed.
-
To ensure that pupils are prepared for puberty.
-
To help pupils to develop a healthier, safer lifestyle.
